Just outside of Castle Rock, CO, the Dawson’s Butte Open Space offers a fantastic loop hike just off the foothills. Though you never actually get to climb or set foot on the butte itself (private property), this hike takes you down along side it through patches of meadows and strands of trees. Views of the butte can be seen throughout as well as some great looks down into the valley before the first range begins. Recently the forest service has even made great progress here in cleaning up dead growth and exposing the forest floor. The hike can also be made into a smaller loop using some interconnecting trails if desired. This area is very horse friendly – so be prepared to encounter some friendly beasts and their not so great items that are left behind.
