TRAIL DESCRIPTION
Found in the Gunnison National Forest and Fossil Ridge Wilderness, the Lamphier Lakes hike offers a quick ascent through a mostly pine forest. The trail can be rocky at times and has a few creek crossing. Reaching the bowl, Lamphier Lake is a sight to see with the clear water and the large, rocky ridges surrounding it outside of the trees. Continuing on, the trail become a little less visible as you work through a scree field and begin a sharp vertical gain to Gunsight Pass. Absolutely worth the effort, the gunsight shaped slot through the top of the ridge gives amazing views to each side with several peaks in sight as well as a handful of 14ers. The limestone ridges in this area are impressive and known to harbor fossilized remains of prehistoric sea creatures. Another great attribute of this trail is the wildflowers in plenty alongside the path.
